Dear Multi-Pure Customer,

Recently, some areas of Portland were affected by an E. coli outbreak in the public water supply.  This outbreak prompted a “boil water order” in parts of the city, and furthermore may affect the performance of your Multi-Pure drinking water system.  As there is no easy way to determine if a Multi-Pure system is still contaminated without testing the water, which is time consuming and costly, Multi-Pure is recommending that customers using any Multi-Pure drinking water system in the affected areas replace their filter cartridges and disinfect their systems.  Here are the steps for disinfecting your drinking water system:

1. Remove and discard the used filter.

2. Clean & rinse out the inside of the housing.

3. Add 5 to 7 drops of bleach, such as Clorox™ or Purex™ (5 ¼% sodium hypochlorite) to the bottom canister.

4. Reconnect the housing top and bottom without the replacement filter.

5. Turn on water and let unit housing fill up with the water/bleach solution.

6. Allow unit to soak for at least 30 minutes.

a. Countertop Units: To disinfect the spout, place your finger over the tip of the spout and turn the unit upside down. Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times during the 30-minute soak period.

b. Below Sink Units: To disinfect the faucet spout, remove the spout and place it in a container with one-quart of water and bleach (use 5 drops of bleach) and allow to soak for 30 minutes.

7. Rinse out the housing.

a. After the housing has soaked for 30 minutes, reconnect the faucet, and turn on the water supply to the housing and allow to flow to waste for 5 minutes.

b. Turn off the water supply and disassemble the top and bottom rinse out the inside of the housing.

8. Replace the filter (cartridge) following the instructions with the new filter.
